Steam, origin etc help

Postby Outblast » Wed Jan 04, 2017 12:35 pm

As im slowly getting ready for a pc upgrade I have had this thought in my head for sometime about the nature of games intalled on my current pc.
I have my windows, origin and uplay installed on my ssd which will obviously be getting a fresh coat of windows 7 and all the games(from all the platforms) + steam on my HDD which will remain untouched.
So the question is, will I have to redownload and install all the games? Or will these platforms recognise these games on HDD after i change pc's.

After installing Steam, you can just validate your games, and it'll be fine.

Others, i don't know.

Steam does work between drives, but it can sometimes be finicky. Sometimes it takes a quick verify of all of the files to make sure that Steam sees the games.

Origin also does this, but it is far glitchier; moving games to different hard drives sometimes crapped out, especially with BF1 which would launch but not work properly.

Uplay is fine... I think.

As long as all the games are still inside the Steam install folder, then all you need to do on your new computer is open Steam and install all the games that you have in your Steam install folder as if you were installing them from scratch. The installer will then detect and local game content and then download any files that it doesn't find - 90% of the time though, it will find all the files fine.

Origin I think already detects your games as installed, but i'm not sure since i've never had to do this with Origin games. It might also work the same way as Steam. Uplay I have no idea unfortunately because I think it's a shit piece of software, but if Straw hasn't had any problems then i'm sure you won't either.

Steam games didnt require redownloading, origin did and for uplay this trick worked and saved me from redownloading the crew:

1. Make a backup folder and paste there whole Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag folder from game installation directory (default: C:/Program files (x86)/Ubisoft/Ubisoft Game Launcher/games)

2. Install Uplay, open, log in - and start downloading AC4. When you'll have few MB, close Uplay.

3. Go to game installation directory - you'll see newly created Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag folder - remove it.

4. Now, the most important step - go to C:/Program files (x86)/Ubisoft/Ubisoft Game Launcher/data/273 - you'll see folder "manifest" and file " uplay_install.state" - remove them both.

5. Copy Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag from your backup folder and paste it to game installation directory.

6. Open Uplay again - and you should see "Play" instead of "Download".
